why direct mail

Why Direct Mail?

While most people are obsessed with the internet, like bees are with honey, you must realize the internet is crowded and competitive. People have the attention span of a gnat while on the internet. People are bombarded with emails, ads and marketing messages while spending even five minutes online.

Not so with direct mail. People love to check their mail every day and most people read all of their mail before they decide to keep it or throw it away. In my opinion, reaching someone by mail is much easier to do than reaching someone online.

I also believe that direct mail is much CHEAPER than doing things online. Advertising online is expensive, but I can print a postcard, buy a lead, and buy a stamp for about 45 cents.

Why Use Cheap Ugly Postcards?

Many people wonder why someone would pick a cheap ugly postcard, rather than something that is pleasing to the eye. Here are a few reasons that come to mind.

  1. They are easy to make
  2. They are inexpensive
  3. They get your prospect’s attention
  4. They stand out in the crowd

The bottom line is that cheap ugly postcards are different. They’re so ugly, people feel inclined to read them. They work. The only thing on them is your MESSAGE.

Here‟s the key to understand the psychology of postcard success. With postcards, you only have a 10 second window of opportunity to get someone to respond. You see, postcards are a “direct response” marketing venue. The goal is to generate direct, immediate response. The person looking at your postcard will give you the 10 seconds. Your goal is to give them all they need in that 10 second window to cause them to either go to your website or call you on the phone. If you‟re marketing a home business-type program, just give them your 800 Sizzle line Message or a Website. Personally I prefer to use a (800) Sizzle Message to pre-sell or get them excited to take the next step, such as visit my website or listen to a conference call. But if you‟re a carpet cleaner or a dentist, for example, you want them to call you and make an appointment.

what to put on your postcards

What Should Be Printed on Your Cheap Ugly Postcard?

Your cheap ugly postcard should be on bright yellow or bright pink cardstock, so they stand out. There should be NO GRAPHICS of any kind. Your goal is simply to have a headline, a few benefit/bullet points and a strong call to action. You can send people to your sizzle call or website to get additional information.

Your headline must CAPTURE their attention. Your benefit or bullet points must tell your prospect what’s in it for them and your call to action must tell them exactly what you want them to do next.

Also, you want to have several ways for people to get in touch with you. Make sure you include at least three ways for people to reach you, such as your email, website and phone number.

It’s best not to try to sell something directly from your postcard. Instead, you want to offer your prospect free information and then let that free information sell them on what it is you are offering.

Finally, make sure you use a real stamp on your postcard. Sorry, but no metered mail or bulk mail. The real stamp makes your postcard stand out.

How to Get Started with Cheap Ugly Postcards

At this point, you might be wondering how to get started with cheap ugly postcards. I want to share my step by step instructions, so you can achieve success.

# 1 Pick a Niche

The first thing you need to do is pick a niche. Any niche COULD work. However, I suggest you pick a niche you understand and pick a niche where people have disposable income and are already spending money on stuff THROUGH THE MAIL. Put some serious thought into your niche selection. You don’t want a niche that is so small you can’t find any lists to buy. The best niches are MASS MARKET, such as weight loss, making money, dealing with stress, relationships, sex, personal finances, etc.

# 2 Identify a Need

Once you have chosen a niche, the next thing you need to do is identify a need. Ultimately, you need to figure out the problems and concerns the people in your niche are having. If you don’t know, do a survey and ask people. You are looking for a need or void to fill.

# 3 Pick a Product

Now that you know your niche, and you have identified a need, the next step is to find a product. When it comes to choosing a product or service, you must look for something that offers the following things.

  • Minimum $100 to $200 profit PER SALE and preferably more than that
  • Offers a real value
  • Solves a problem people in your niche are dealing with
  • Comes with a strong money back guarantee

I only suggest you promote a product or service you are familiar with and have used yourself.

# 4 Design Your Postcard

Your next step is to design your cheap ugly postcard. If you don’t have any marketing or copywriting experience, I suggest you find someone to hire. It should cost you less than $50. Once you have a design, share it with several people in your niche to see their reaction to the content. Also, share your postcard with a few copywriters to get their input. Your postcard should be simple and easy to read, have a strong headline, a few bullet points and a strong call to action.

# 5 Buy a List

You’re heading in the right direction. Your next step is to buy your mailing list. There are tons of vendors online where you can buy mailing lists from. In most cases, you’re going to pay anywhere from 8 cents to 15 cents per lead, depending on the niche you chose and how many leads you buy at a time.

# 6 Mail Your First Batch of Postcards

Next, you want to mail your first batch of at least 2,500 postcards. Anything less than this is too small of a sample size. This will give you a good idea about your response rates and help you determine if your product or service will sell.

# 7 Test & Tweak

Once your first mailing is complete, the next step is to analyze your numbers. How many leads did you generate? How many sales did you get? What is your Return on Investment? What worked well and what could you do differently the next time around? Feel free to make a few small adjustments and then compare your results with your first mailing. This will give you good insight.

# 8 Scale Your Efforts

You are now ready to scale your efforts. Now you can mail 5,000 to 10,000 postcards at a time and know you will get a predictable result. This is where the real money is made. Do not jump to this step too quickly. Even if you have a lot of money you can invest, break into down into smaller batches, so you can keep improving your conversion rates and make the most amount of money possible.

The beauty of postcards which is also the beauty of direct mail and direct marketing is that once you test a postcard and a product and find a winner, you‟ll get the same response with 100 postcards as you will with 100,000 postcards. It‟s a numbers game…specifically a percent of response numbers game.

What Others Are Saying

Many business owners are convinced that a Simple, Cheap & Ugly Postcard with the right message on it, mailed out to previous clients or to prospective customers gets the most bang for the advertising buck of any form of promotion, even when they also advertise in print, on the radio and TV, sky-writing, you name it.

You can mail out a Simple, Cheap & Ugly Postcard up to 4 1/4 inches by 6 inches via First Class Mail pre-sorted very affordable. You will get this cheaper than the lowest letter and that’s for standard, bulk rate, not first class. In order, postcard design must:

  1. command attention
  2. create desire
  3. visually guide customers to your call to action

Notably absent from this list is “be beautiful.” Postcards are not paintings. They are not art. They are marketing tools. Ugly postcards easily satisfy all three design purposes. They command attention because they’re unique and different. Enormous black letters on a yellow background provides stark contrast, is easy to read, and efficiently delivers a marketing message. That marketing message creates desire, and if all that’s left is a call to action customers’ eyes will be drawn to it.

  1. Wow! You’ve done so much work to put this excellent and well detailed information together. The use of a cheap ugly postcard is indeed a brilliant strategy to grow your business online. Getting your customers’ attention and making them want to come back again requires a lot of hard work, i.e you need to have great content that solves their problems.

I think you really have a brilliant idea concerning the use of ugly postcards. I’m going to try it out and see how it works. Thanks for sharing.

    • Awesome. I know you can do this. Using cheap ugly postcards definitely works. I hope you will test and experiment to see how good you can make it work for you.

  2. I’ve known about direct mail for the longest time, actually well over 15 years, but never really given it any thought or a try. This has actually convinced me to take a hard look at it and consider using it. And the examples you’ve given about how to make money with post cards is impressive! I might dabble with direct mailing, using your tips here. Thanks for writing it up!

    • Glad to help. Most people have heard of it, but have not tried it. I think as time goes on, postcards and direct mail will be even more effective, because fewer people are doing it.

  3. It’s always refreshing to come across new marketing techniques, and I must admit, I have never heard of the cheap, ugly postcard option. I like it because it’s different. As you said, when people go online they are bombarded with information even with being online for a few minutes. This is an excellent option. You have also done a good job of explaining how to go about it. This is something I might just give a try.

Thanks for creating this post. It gets a five-star rating from me.

    • Five stars. I’ll take it. Cheap ugly postcards definitely work. I hope you will try it out and see how it works for you.

  4. Until I read your article I had dismissed direct mail as being too expensive and difficult to pull off. Although the economics you provided was still above what I can afford, there was one point that stood out. The percentage return of a small mailing campaign is the same as a large one. That level of predictability makes this worth considering.

However, one must be prepared to lose the initial investment if the results are very poor. I feel that there is a minimum amount of capital needed to make this work, because it may take a few different mailings to find the postcard message gives the highest return.

Another point that was a huge surprise to me was the ugly postcards that work best have no graphics on them. This upends the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. I guess that doesn’t apply to ugly postcard mailing campaigns.

I will have to keep this method under advisement until I have a few thousand dollars of disposable money available. Thanks for coming up with this Blog.

    • Yes, it costs money and is not for everyone, but if you can do it profitably, it’s wonderful. I normally have to do a few different tests before I find my winning idea. And yes, ugly postcards do work better. Most marketers are more concerned about “how something looks” rather than “how well it converts.” How well something converts is the ONLY thing that really matters.

  5. Wow! Very powerful article. It was very engaging. I have already started working out a plan to create and send out my first batch of “ Ugly Postcards”.

I started my first business 10 years ago. Starting a business, getting your business known and keeping your business number one takes a lot of hard work and dedication.

My first business was a residential treatment center for teenage girls. To get our services out the we went to promoting fairs, made fliers, and sent out mailers. The business took off, like most businesses, you have to continually promote the business to keep it successful.

I never tried “Ugly Postcards” I believe, they would have been a great contribution.

Thank you for your insight and the great informative article. I am excited to give it a go.

    • Thanks for sharing. I believe you could use cheap ugly postcards to promote ANY type of business successfully. I believe that 99 percent of the time they will outperform a pretty postcard with graphics.

  6. It almost seems like you are suggesting that we use “Cheap Ugly Postcards” to promote our online business and I suppose this could work for any niche.  The only postcards I have ever sent anyone are the ones you get at vacation spots.  There is just enough room for 4 sentences and an address.  Surprisingly, as you say, people do like to check their mail.  I do it myself, every day.

I have never used them that way but I have to say that I have received stuff like that in the regular mail from time to time for anything from oil changes to eyewear to Real Estate.  I always wonder where they get our address.  Should have known it was from a purchased mailing list.

At this time I don’t think it would be something I would consider but that’s only because of a tight budget but, I can certainly see how something like this could work so I will certainly make a memo to see how I could fit something like that into my marketing strategy in the future.

Waiting for my next post card,

    Wayne

    • Awesome comment. Postcards do work. If you’re on a tight budget, it’s tough, but if you can afford it and are willing to invest money, it can definitely pay out. If you ever do intend on using direct mail, make sure you do cheap ugly postcards and not pretty ones.

  7. This marketing strategy seems to be interesting and new to me but you’ve cleared that it can work. Up till now I’ve been taking into consideration only free traffic leading ideas. Do you really think it is worth the money you invest? As you say it can work in any niche, do you really believe it’s for weight loss niche as well? So far I’ve thought that only ’nice’ photos are welcome here.

  8. This postcard marketing strategy seems to be interesting and new to me, but you’ve shown that it can work. Up till now I’ve been taking into consideration only free traffic strategies. Do you really think it is worth the money you invest? As you say, it can work in any niche, do you really believe it’s good for the weight loss niche as well?

    • Yes, cheap ugly postcards can work in any niche. Free strategies do work, but they require a lot of time and patience. Paid strategies are almost always better because you can roll it out quickly, test it to see what works and then scale up your efforts.

  9. This is an excellent idea and a strategy that I haven’t tried yet. Maybe people will take more notice of stuff that they receive via snail mail than an email. This type of advertising will also stand out more.

I just wonder how you would track which source your visitors came from. Do you use a bit.ly link or some sort of tracker link on the postcards, or just your normal affiliate link?

    • Just use a tracking link for each mailing that you do. That’s all there is to it. Then you will know your conversions and return on investment. Keep in mind, you should track ALL advertising, even the free strategies you use. I hope that helps.

  10. I prefer Facebook ads and PPC over direct mail, but I definitely see how cheap ugly postcards could work when done right. Do you think you could take a picture of the postcard and use it for advertising online, or would you strictly stick with direct mail? Thanks for the clarification.

    • Glad to be of help. Facebook and PPC ads work. I’ve done both with much success. I just prefer direct mail because it is much simpler and much easier, and in many cases, much cheaper.

  11. Dear Charles,

Thanks a lot for the informative and insightful post.

Being an affiliate marketer and blogger, I always look for opportunities to improve my traffic and make more sales by getting potential leads. The direct mail method using postcards is an eye-opener for me. Indeed, the cost is very cheap compared to other options.

On the internet there are a lot of distraction, but on direct mail we can grab people’s attention very well. Plus, where I live in the world, mailing postcards is very inexpensive.

Thanks for the helpful advice on what to print and how to make money with postcards. I got helpful insights from your post. This post can be used as a guide on making money using postcards.

The sources you shared about the potential of direct mailing using postcards are inspiring and motivating. This post made me to think more on the subject.

    Paul

    • Paul,

Why not give it a test and see how it works for you? Nothing ventured, nothing gained. You might just discover that mailing postcards is the best marketing strategy you could think of.

      Chuck

  12. I know of lots of people doing email marketing, but I haven’t heard of many people sending out postcards, especially in today’s internet age. Have you made money from postcard mailing and if so was it worth your time? How exactly do you sell the product through the postcards? Any tips would be appreciated.

    • Yes, I’ve made great money selling stuff via postcards and with email marketing. When you use postcards, you always want to send people to capture page first and then redirect them to your sales page. Offer free information rather than try to sell directly from the postcard. That is some of the best advice I can share with you.

  13. I thought postcards were more or less a thing of the past. I think that the last postcard I sent was 20 years ago. I guess these postcards refer to US residents and US products. But, how do you pick the people to send the postcards to?

It seems to me that this is like unsolicited, untargeted flyers, which are more or less treated like spam. And also, shouldn’t we use a QR Code instead of a link to a website or a product?

    Marios

    • Postcards work because you can match your offer with the right audience. You can determine your target market, reach out to a list broker, and find a list that aligns with what you are trying to sell. I don’t know anyone who has used a QR code, but I know that just about anyone can call a toll free number or visit a website, so I would definitely stick with that.

I don’t think postcards are treated like spam. Most people enjoy looking through their mail. If what you are offering them catches their attention, in most cases they will read your postcard and visit your website, just what you want them to do.

And yes, this advice is geared toward USA residents and USA postcards. Thanks.

  14. Amazing post, Chuck. Your website is already in my top 10 list, I keep visiting it regularly. In this post you have presented the idea of cheap ugly postcards. And, I’m surprised that I’ve never ever heard of this idea before. I found this article very educational and informative.

I’m very much looking forward to try this new method, it seems to have a lot of potential and it sounds interesting as well. Do you think it works well all across the world? Because, I don’t think that in my country postcards are available till now. Anyways, I’ll have a look into that.

Thanks a lot for sharing this useful information. It has made my day. I appreciate it.

    • I think it could work in any country. If nothing else, do an experiment and test it out. You never know until you try. Find a good offer, a good list and mail out 5,000 postcards and see what type of results you get.

  15. I haven’t used postcards in such a long time. I used  to when I visited places and sent them to my family. I have to say that cheap ugly postcards are definitely a different approach. I find that paying for mailing lists and postage is very expensive. The average business can’t afford it. That being said, it might be a good fit for some businesses.

    • It’s cool that you used to send out postcards. I can assure you, they still work.
